Pathfinder 1e: Magic Talismans

As a long time Pathfinder publisher, I’ve gotten to know the magic items available rather well. This is one of the things that I think need a refresh. Take scrolls for example. It’s a spell on a piece of paper. That can be changed some, I believe. Change them to talismans. Wear them around your neck, pull out the right one, and speak the spell completion words and poof the spell goes off. Same effect as a scroll but a different in the imagination.

This particular one is an update of a an old 3.5 feat that never got as much appreciation as I felt it deserved.

After you read the feat, be sure to check out all of our spells and other magical options for Pathfinder like the Book of Magic: Signature Spells 2 at the JBE Shop, DriveThruRPG, the Open Gaming Store, and Paizo.

Craft Magic Talisman [Item Creation]

You can create magic fetishes (also called charms) that hold spells until triggered. A talisman is a singleuse magic item and functions like a scroll.

Prerequisite: Caster level 1st.

Benefit: You can create a talisman of any spell that you know. Crafting a talisman takes 2 hours if its base price is 250 gp or less, otherwise scribing a scroll takes 1 day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. To craft a talisman, you must use up raw materials costing half of this base price.

The base price of a talisman is its spell level times its caster level times 25 gp. Any talisman that stores a spell with a costly material component cost also carries a commensurate cost.

Activating a talisman is the same as activating a scroll.

Pathfinder: Scaling Feats

The Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Lizardfolk came out earlier this week and we are showing off what is inside it all week long. Check out the Racial Traits and the Tribal Defender archetype. Today we are showing off some of the many feats in inside.

Some races rely heavily on spells and magic items. Since lizardfolk tend to be poor and live in swamps, they must instead rely upon their own physical abilities to hold their own. Check out some of these unique lizardfolk feats.

Aquatic Adaptation

Your lungs can extract oxygen from water.
Prerequisites: Hold breath.
Benefit: You can breathe water as well as air.

Death Roll (Combat)

You can overwhelm opponents in watery environments, dragging them beneath the surface and shaking them to bits.
Prerequisites: Str 15, base attack bonus +4, lizardfolk, swim speed.
Benefit: When grappling or pinning an opponent of your size or smaller in water, you automatically inflict your bite damage and knock the creature prone during each round that you maintain the grapple or pin. Each round that you do so, the creature’s number of rounds that it can hold its breath without beginning to drown is also reduced by half the damage your bite deals.
Special: Lizardfolk who possess the hulk alternate racial trait can use this ability on Large foes.

Propelling Tail

Your muscular tail adds extra power to your jumps, gaining you additional height and distance with every leap.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Acrobatic, lizardfolk.
Benefit: You add your Strength modifier to Acrobatics checks made to jump.

Sickening Bite

Your filth-ridden teeth sicken creatures that you bite.
Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +8, diseased bite racial trait, lizardfolk.
Benefit: A creature that suffers ability damage from your diseased bite is also sickened for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution modifier.

Pathfinder: The Wings of Combat

All week long we are sharing with you some of our favorite parts of the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Wyvarans for Pathfinder. Previously we shared their racial stats and two archetypes. Today, we are posting a few of the combat feats a wyvaran can take that are exclusive to the race. These feats reveal a different fighting style than most races, emblematic of their draconic heritage. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Deadly Diver (Combat)
When you dive, you usually connect, one way or the other.
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1, wyvaran
Benefit: When you perform a charge while flying and you miss on your attack, you may make another attack roll. If the attack is successful you deal 1d4 + your Strength bonus of bludgeoning damage to the target as you bodily connect with your target. This attack does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Gnome Hunter (Combat)
You have taken on a small measure of the racial enmity that kobolds feel.
Prerequisite: Wyvaran
Benefit: You gain a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls and a +2 racial bonus on damage rolls against gnomes.

Telling Tail (Combat)
You are more adept at using your tail in combat.
Prerequisite: Wyvaran
Benefit: You may use your slapping tail as a primary natural attack.
Normal: You may only use your slapping tail to make attacks of opportunity.

Wing Bash (Combat)
Your strong wings support you in combat.
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1, wyvaran
Benefit: You can make bashing attacks with each of your wings. This is a secondary natural attack that deals 1d4 bludgeoning damage.

Half-Faerie Dragon Artwork

Book of Heroic Races: Half-Faerie DragonsLater this week we will be releasing Book of Heroic Races: Half-Faerie Dragons, written by Todd Stewart. We are really excited to tell you all about this but for today, we are going to show off the artwork. These are some of the images from inside this new race supplement. Normally JBE is very conscious of our art, but for this, the race’s whimsical nature worked well with a more scantly clad and highly athletic character. As such, we decided we should have both genders dressed in such a fashion.

Stay tuned tomorrow to read some of the great character options presented inside.

[Pathfinder] Recent Reviews Roundup (5-Star Edition)

We’ve recently got some excellent reviews of some of our books and every last one was a 5-Star review! So I thought I would share excerpts and links to them for you.

First up, we have the book that everyone loves: the Book of the River Nations: Complete Player’s Reference for Kingdom Building. The first review comes from a gentlemen named Gregg Helmberger. Here are some of the highlights from his 5-Star review:
“Therefore, anything that can make your life easier as a GM is something to buy, treasure, and recommend to others.”
“If you plan to feature a lot of mass combat, you NEED this.”
“this is excellent stuff that you will make use of”
“Overall, this is a truly exemplary resource for players and GMs using the Kingdom Building subsystems in their games.”
Thank you Gregg for your kind words. I really appreciate them.

Next up is John Benbo‘s 5-Star review of the same book. His review is much shorter, but is no less filled with love for this book. To show exactly how he felt, he titled the review “Indispensable!” I’m just going to reprint the whole review here:

When I decided to start up my Kingmaker campaign, I knew I had to have this book from the reviews I’ve read and it hasn’t let me down. My group is still slogging away through book 2 but they have already gone through 4 and half years of kingdom builing. The players have enjoyed the extra buildings and, as the GM, I’ve really enjoyed the expanded random encounter section. Additionally, being available in print makes it more convenient to flip through at the table. What also impressed me was the community support of this product by creating an excel spreadsheet that incorporated the extra material in this book. This has made the kingdom building aspect a breeze to keep track of.

The last 5-Star review we’ve received recently is for the Book of Beasts: Monsters of the Shadow Plane from “Stark Enterprises VP“. He described this book as:

“this is a spectacular little collection of monsters.”
“There’s not a single beast in this thing that isn’t well-worth your purchase dollars.”
“The flavor text of this thing is pretty awesome too.”
“I can’t wait to see the other books in this line, just on the quality of this stuff.”
“In the final analysis, Jon Brazer’s knocked another one out of the park”

Despite all these wonderful things, its the last line in Stark’s review that really says it all, I think. Despite having received the PDF as a review copy he said, “I’ll be buying this myself when the print/PDF combo goes live … it’s that good!” Thank you. Truly, thank you.
